Thanks so much!! I’ve stopped visiting particular websites because they had right-click blocked…now I can just override it!

It was a real nuisance trying to bookmark pages with right-click disabled — fairly self-defeating on the part of the owners, I would have thought. Thanks!

Another wonderful idea is to download the Web Developer’s Toolbar from Chris Pederick’s web site (or other Firefox toolbar sites). Then just choose “Disable | Disable JavaScript” from the pull-down menu.

Great idea Chris, but does that disable all javascript? Sorry I’m not in a place where I can try it out for myself. Keep in mind that a lot of javascript is helpful, and sometimes required for a website’s features to work completely.

Why not just press the right-click button on the keyboard, between the alt+ctrl keys. That works 99.8% of the time

“Right-click button”? Never heard of that one before.. though I do have a menu key and Windows key.

Also, thanks for the tip. Just a few days ago I ran across a page that disabled right-click, and a dialog box popped up to tell me I was bad… yet, the context menu came up anyway. I also noticed that it was also possible to prevent scripts from resizing windows, which is one of my biggest pet peeves with site designers. Many thanks to the people that make Firefox such an incredible tool.

The article isn’t really about blocking right clicks on a web page, but about how to disallow that functionality on web pages viewed with Firefox.

I suggest not disabling the context menu (the menu that appears when you right click on the page), unless it is vital to the functionality of your site, since it most often causes frustration with your users, since they cannot easily get to many common menu items, such as bookmarking the page or copying text.

If the purpose of disabling the right click is simply to prevent people from stealing your images or viewing your page’s source, you are fooling yourself. It is easy to get around. But, if you insist on disabling right click for saving images and viewing source, you could override the right click menu and create your own that has all the features normally present minus the ones that you don’t want people to use.

Wow…I never thought about using stopPropogation that way Jimmy. Lets just hope that this remains mostly in the hands of those who are smart enough to include an option to disable the custom menu. This might actually be something Mozilla might want to look into thwarting, in my opinion. I have always held the opinion that the context menu is a browser feature, and thus should not be accessible to change or to disable by any web page - just like any other chrome item.

However, I recall reading once something about being able to get permission from the user to give the web page access to chrome elements. In my opinion a way for the browser (in the hands of the user) to control whether a page can modify chrome elements is ideal, since the modification is sometimes desirable.

Your menu, Cole, is a good implementation of the idea that Gostrath mentioned.

Running Firefox 1.5.0.1, I see no “Web Features tab” (unless I have some strange setup which prevents me from seeing the tab). Instead, it’s under Tools > Options > Content > Advanced.

Didn’t work for me. Completed the steps and closed/reopened firefox browser and went back to the website I found and it still pops up with a warning that “all contents copywrited . . . and may not be copied in any way”. Wonder is there a way for the web designer to outsmart this trick?

Forget that last post. Rebooting computer took care of that problem! Thanks for the help.

www.channelchooser.com seems to have figured out a neat way to disable right click on the media player window embedded on the web page, when a video stream is playing.

Any suggestions on how to enable right click here?

I’m using firefox 1.5.0.4, and have unchecked ‘disable or replace contex menus’ in Advanced Javascript options.
