Smart Keywords are an easy way to search websites right from your location bar. If you wanted to use the search box on Firefox Tutor to find a tutorial, you would have to navigate to the website, type your search query in the box, and then click Search to actually perform the search. Instead of going through all of those clicks, wouldn't you rather be able to search Firefox Tutor right from the location bar? That's what Smart Keywords do.

With Smart Keywords all you do is type a keyword before your search terms, so that Firefox understands that you want the search to go to our site. If you set the keyword to "fxt", for example, you would type "fxt", then your search terms. So something like "fxt extensions". This all goes on right from your location bar!

Let me show you exaclty how this works. Smart Keywords are easy to set up, just read the steps below.

First of all, you need to navigate to the site that you want to search. In our case it's FXT. For this site, you don't need to be on the front page, you can find a search form at the top of every page. Right click on the search box to bring up the context menu. You will see an option that says "Add a Keyword for this Search…". Click this.

Notice that this brings up an add Bookmark box, with the addition of a "Keyword" field. This is because all Smart Keywords are stored in the form of a Bookmark. So you might want to make a new bookmark directory to keep all of your Smart Keywords separate from your bookmarks.

Type in a name for your Smart Keyword, and a keyword. Remember that the keyword should be short and easy to remember, so that you can type it easily into the location bar. I simply used "fxt".

Now you can search through the articles at FXT by simply typing your keyword and query.

The keywords that are already setup when you install Firefox are
Gooogle search (keyword google)
Dictionary.com (keyword dict)
Google stock symbol search (keyword quote)
Wikipedia (keyword wp) and
Urban Dictionary (keyword slang).

You can see the bookmarks used to represent these keywords under Bookmarks > Quick Searches.
